Use USB-A with devices that connect using a USB cable. USB ports are sometimes known by the USB specification of the port: USB 3, USB 2, or USB 1. The USB specification relates to the speed at which the port can transfer data, and the amount of power it can supply to a connected device. An admitted Apple snob has become discontented with high price and lack of innovation.
I also am concerned that you cannot freely review products here. I needed to go on other numerous sites to get user reviews. My MacBook works fine but I have had to buy numerous cables, adapters and add ons to get it to work the way I need. For $1299 on the MacBook I think the cables, etc. Should come with it.

I've unfortunately seen a lot of people write 'reviews' only to vent about how they don't like this or that about how apple runs things. That usually has nothing to do with how the product functions. So from a product perspective this is awesome and therefor get's 5 stars.

Comparable third-party units incur nearly equivalent damages to one’s wallet. I maintain that $19 for a lasting cable is fair, and I’m content that I can finally fast-charge my iPhone X with a third-party USB-IF-certified USB-PD power supply and Apple’s USB-C-to-Lightning cable! This shorter cable costs $20. The USB-C charger you'll also need to buy is an additional $50. That means you're spending $70 minimum to charge your iPhone somewhat faster. The value of this product, cost vs benefit, is questionable at best. More (Read full review).

Unlike Apple's previous chargers, this cable trades the standard USB-A plug for a USB-C The cable works well, and fast-charging is helpful, but it's cumbersome. Unlike Apple's previous chargers, this cable trades the standard USB-A plug for a USB-C plug, allowing it to connect to MacBooks and the new iPad Pro. This also means that it can ONLY connect to MacBooks and iPad Pro's, unless you decide to spend $80 on a wall adapter, but that's another issue entirely. My biggest complaint is the length of the cable; it's just too long.
The shortest available length is 1 meter, which is more than 3 feet long. A long cable is helpful, if you want to charge your phone from across the room. However, as said above, there isn't a reasonable power adapter.
Most people are going to charge their phones from their MacBooks. This forces you to wind the cable into a massive coil that takes up most of your desk.
Then there's the power bricks. Personally, I bought this cable so I could sync my phone to iTunes without having to use an adapter, but at this point I'm considering going back to using a dongle. I'd love to take advantage of the fast charging without having to use my MacBook, but despite Apple leading the charge with USB-C, they only make two compatible power adapters. Both of them are massive, both of them are expensive, and both of them are sold separately. This just isn't common sense. Honestly, you're better off with a USB-A adapter. Fastcharging isn't worth the frustration.
